In light of the terrible injustices we’ve recently witnessed—the deaths of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, and Breonna Taylor in the US, and Regis Korchinski-Paquet in Canada; the increasing militancy of the United States, who continue to attack their own citizens; and our already crystal clear understanding of the systemic oppression of the Black community and other marginalized groups—we have spent the past week deeply considering our responsibility as designers.

At Say Yeah we believe that being intentional about designing products and services in an inclusive way can lead to outcomes that radically transform communities and lives for the better.

We know that these methodologies can be applied to more systemic change, but we also know and recognize the strengths and limitations of design agencies who work across a broad spectrum of specialties that include graphic design, user research, service design, architecture, media, software, and more.

As a design agency leader, I have a responsibility to our team and to the people who engage with our work. We cannot be a party to oppression. We cannot make excuses for our own failings. We cannot hide behind our clients should they not take their responsibilities seriously.

I need to take the lead from the design leaders who have been doing this important work—especially those leaders from underrepresented groups. I need to be open to criticism and acknowledge that I don’t have all the answers.

And as I make this pledge today, I call on all other design agency leaders to also be responsible to your team and those people who engage with your work in the following ways.

Be selective about the clients we work with and the projects we work on.

Demand representation on our project teams, with our clients, and with our suppliers.

Be intentional about co-creating with diverse and underrepresented communities.

Use our platforms to spotlight exceptional but underrepresented people, organizations, products, and services.

Invest time and money in providing underrepresented youth with access to industry training, mentorship, and events.

Above all, listen to community leaders and individuals from underrepresented groups to better understand needs, objectives, and outcomes that can lead to equity.

Every day, we have to strive to deliver products and services that better serve diverse and underrepresented people, and reshape the products, services, and culture of our clients so that they may do the same.

That is our responsibility as design agency leaders.

It is a responsibility I take on with great sincerity and humility, beginning with:

Asking deeper questions of our clients and prospective clients to evaluate whether we’re enabling poor outcomes by working with them.

Focusing our marketing communications on inclusive design to better attract clients and partners who also believe that intention, access, and representation is a responsibility.

Increasing our advocacy of underrepresented professionals with event organizers, publications, and through referrals.

Making more space for underrepresented talent through our paid internships, mentorship, and youth-focused events.

Assessing our talent engagement, outreach, and hiring practices to build stronger relationships with diverse talent.

Evaluating our internal cultural behaviour and workplace practices to ensure we foster a place of belonging for our staff.

I hope you’ll join me in this commitment.

Sincerely,
Lee Dale, CEO

Our team’s been hard at work-from-home considering ways we can bring exponential value to organizations who are suffering from the economic downturn during these trying times.

History shows that organizations who invest in their future when the economy is struggling set themselves up to become market leaders during the ensuing economic growth period.

That’s why we’re thrilled today to be launching a new way to evaluate and improve your site’s usability, accessibility, and inclusion: The Inclusive Website Audit.

This audit guides your team to optimize your website for all audiences and to improve your use of accessibility standards like WCAG 2.1, all reviewed by our expert team.

Learn more about the Inclusive Website Audit

Why is this process so important?

These three factors (usability, accessibility, & inclusion) are key to reaching a wider audience, and retaining and embracing the diverse audience you already have. By improving these factors, your site can be used and loved by even more people, and you can avoid alienating or excluding potential customers.

No two users have the exact same needs and context for which they use your site. As a result, these three factors must be at the forefront of the design, development, and content of your website to be able to capture the widest breadth of your addressable market.

How the audit works

You can choose between an Essential, Starter, and Custom audit package, each providing actionable next steps you can take to improve your website.

To describe the past few weeks as challenging is an understatement.

Our team extends sincere thanks to brave healthcare workers and to community members responsibly ‘flattening the curve‘ and we’re taking our own steps to work and live carefully.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen a drastic shift in the status quo. However, in this era of speedy information sharing, changing perceptions of the COVID-19 emergency are accelerated, for better and for worse. We urge you to be conscientious of the people and public surfaces you interact with, practice social distancing, and wash your hands with soap regularly and thoroughly.

And we encourage you to limit your interaction with the endless stream of news, tweets, and doomsaying which is sure to impact your mental health.

Planning for a better tomorrow

This period of disruption of the status quo can be a crucial turning point for successful organizations. In times like these—marked by unpredictable market behaviour and economic uncertainty—when leaders choose foresight over fear—improving products and services instead of retrenching—they unlock the potential to be market leaders in the next growth period.

We’re certain of this: if you can deliver services online, your market access remains stronger than ever. Internet usage is up over the last two weeks as the general public begins working from home. However, if your market access is currently limited, now is the time to refine your products and services to focus on digital access, automation, and data intelligence. Harness the power of inevitable future market growth and pent-up demand. Take charge on your path to digital transformation.

Thanks to decades of experience in remote work, the Say Yeah team is well equipped to support organizations at all levels of digital proficiency. Our work is ‘remote’ by nature—from our intercontinental team to our global client network.

We work across Ontario and beyond

Our team of multidisciplinary and senior designers and strategists work across Ontario and further afield, with staff as ‘remote’ as Chennai, India.

We’re experts at remote work and collaborate seamlessly with digital processes and tools. Whether it’s running workshops, conducting user testing, developing strategy, designing, or chairing meetings, we’re extremely comfortable collaborating across timezones on digital platforms.

While members of our team enjoy time in our Toronto studio, we have years of experience working online, which ensures effective collaboration from anywhere and everywhere.

Remote work is a standard state of being for Say Yeah! Our staff and collaborators are based in locations across Ontario, and well beyond.

Innovating & collaborating remotely

Over the past twelve years, our diverse client work made us remote work experts organically. If your team can benefit from building its capacity in digital services or improving its digital maturity, we can help, no matter where you’re located.

We have recently worked with clients and teams in:

Canada

US

Europe

Africa

India

Australia

South America

Remote doesn’t mean that stakeholders and consumers are not engaged. We’re experts in: remote tests, online interviews, video collaboration, collaborative documentation, and other interactive tools.

We’re fully equipped to conduct research, design products and services, and strategize with a digital workflow, which is customized to each client’s preferences. This consistent, effective, and efficient workflow ensures that your projects are successful and sustained without a single in-person meeting, if necessary.

Our approach to COVID-19

To address COVID-19, staff who usually commute by public transit are working from home. We’ve taken other precautions to ensure everyone’s safety and health are prioritized, too—both in and out of the office. There’s been no disruption to our workflow. We continue to operate at full capacity. Thanks to our service design and product strategy methodologies, alongside being equipped with the latest hardware, software, and online tools, we continue to be available to support you. We’re ready to help level up your team’s delivery of great products and services as you navigate working remotely, and to prepare your organization for a swift, strategic return to increased consumer and market behaviour.

We firmly believe that improving your digital products and services now benefits your organization exponentially in the long-term. There’s no better time to invest in digital excellence to strengthen your positioning when we see a return to normalcy.

In partnership with TPL, we’re holding usability testing sessions to expand access to the library’s online offerings.

Please note: Video and audio recording will be used. If you are uncomfortable with being recorded, this isn’t the session for you. A few other basic qualifications are listed below, too.

Please take a moment to answer a few short questions to confirm your availability and interest:

Not a TPL user? We’d still love to speak with you about your experiences as a Torontonian.
