So being part of a fintech and vendor to banks today, that whole notion of big financial institutions working with start ups was completely unheard of five years ago. It isn’t anymore.

We’re constantly challenged by disruptors out there. For the longest time, I think people believed fintechs are more disruptors than partners, and as we see today, fintechs are more partners to the banks, in terms of how we look at the customer journey and solve for different parts of that equation.

What we’re starting to see right now is a huge influx of new competition and new entries to the market who are coming from other countries or other continents, or from other completely different businesses. So Apple, for example. Apple are about to launch a physical credit card. If you were to go back eight years and say is Apple going to be a threat to the financial services industries, you’d be like, no. Well now it’s very much a part of the financial services industries. Facebook has a banking license in Europe, the Chinese social networks all have very large financial offerings now. And all of those things wouldn’t have been foreseen five or six years ago. And I think if you’re only looking within your own business, you’re only looking within your own field, you’re going to be crushed in the onslaught when the new entries arrive.

I think it’s so critical that all companies use digital and design thinking with every breath that they take in their occupation, because if you don’t, you really become the frog in the pot, so the frog in the pot story is that somebody put a frog in cold water in a pot and they slowly increase the heat until it was boiling and the frog was dead. But the frog didn’t feel the heat, and just died. So you know, you don’t expect to be thrown into boiling water, I mean technology doesn’t change instantly, Generation Z is not gonna automatically buy a whole life insurance policy from you, but I think if you don’t use that thinking on a day-to-day basis, then you’re really at risk of being disrupted.

Johannes Suikkanen:

I think first every organization should define its role in the world, even before moving into human-centered design practices. The bigger question is an existential one. Why do we deserve to exist? What is the unique value that we can provide as a company in a society, and for human beings? And once you have that figured out, sort of your unique market definition, out of that, you have to execute it against that. And I think there are these human- centric design methods that are absolutely very valuable.

Sumit Sarkar:

Everybody’s trying to level best to be a customer-centric organization, and human-centered design is a big, big part of it. It’s how you think about customer journeys, what their needs and wants are, and how you kind of fulfill that.

Yaka Sakkejha:

Before we spend a dime on anything, we talk to our customers first. We also then don’t believe our customers because people say one thing and they behave differently. So we will build these small toys or tools with a very small budget, and then float them out to our customers, and then see if our customers actually use it, or if they don’t touch it. And then from there, we’ll look at investing in bigger partnerships. And then of course, using the data that we’ve found from these toys to inform actually building something internally.

Data means everything. We look at vast amounts of data that exist out there in terms of what our customers really need, in fact, even building something like the chatbot, we looked at real life cases of what do people actually ask when they call in, or visit a branch, and as I mentioned, self service online is one of the biggest things people ask for. Branch is one of the biggest things people ask for. ‘Cause you always want to build a product that people are gonna use at the end of the day, and if you don’t kind of build that with a platform or foundation of data, then it’s just a product.

But, virtual reality as a technology, is very interesting and very promising. And will transform the world in some way, will make a cultural change, will make a social change. And so the banking that you do is in a world where VR has happened.

Just try to avoid those labels, because I think those labels have become very problematic, I mean, ideally, you actually start by studying people and thinking about how do you create a very meaningful relationship with them. And I don’t think it’s a bad digital first, I don’t think it’s about just creating experiences, but defining first, like what’s your role? How can you create a very valuable relationship with those people?

Held in the heart of downtown Toronto at the Steam Whistle Brewery, Mobey Day Toronto invited professionals from top Canadian financial services, service design, and technology companies, as well as leaders from across Europe.

The two-day conference welcomed industry veterans and trailblazers to connect and learn, around the topics of open banking, technology partnerships, enhancing customer experience, and emerging technologies and methodologies.

Say Yeah had the privilege of interviewing the global group of speakers, representing top-performing companies that are driving effective transformation and emerging businesses that are disrupting markets.

Here are the topics that stood out to us during the talks and discussion panels.

Customer spending habits

Representing STACK—a new service for people to save and share money through their smartphone—Ranjit Sarai shared the importance of meeting the needs of the growing millennial market, and how data is the answer to meeting these needs.

With millennials trending towards exclusively operating across digital channels in order to manage their finances, this gives organizations more data to work with in order to make informed decisions about product, value, and experience. It’s this active, ongoing feedback loop to learn from that becomes a vital tool in order to continue serving millennials efficiently.

Sarai also highlighted how customer journey mapping and design thinking are great tools for helping organizations understand current behaviour and deliver suitable and customizable solutions to enhancing customer experience and increasing customer spending habits.

Customer Experience (Debbie Gamble, Interac)

Debbie Gamble is the VP of Digital Products and Platforms at Interac. This company is considered a B2B2C, but Gamble and her team believe that design is essential to customer experience. It’s not enough to focus on the businesses they service, and Interac takes its role in shaping the end-user experience seriously.

“Customer is at the centre of everything we do.”

~Debbie Gamble

When bringing products to market, Interac focuses on three key values:

Keeping their customer first;

Embodying a trusted relationship between the company and the client, and;

“pivoting with ease,” which is essential in an age of disruption.

She went on to describe that although serving customers most effectively requires the right channels, that’s not enough. Channels matter, but the right strategy is what makes all the difference.

Chatbot revolution

Sumit Sarkar from BMO presented a case study on the BMO Bolt Messenger Bot. BMO saw the implementation of a chatbot as a way to become more effectively engage with their customers.

They launched the Bolt Messenger Bot on Facebook Messenger and Twitter and found they were able to more effectively deliver service across these networks.

“We wanted to be where consumers are.”

With chatbots following familiar messaging service patterns and usage across already populated networks, BMO was confident that this new channel would be welcomed by the majority of their customers, and they’ve been thrilled with the response so far.

Open banking on the rise

The dynamics of financial services is changing significantly with open banking. With the implementation of real-time money management across a variety of providers, people have more control over their data and their money. The emergence of technology has propelled the notion of open banking (the use of Open Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) that allow third party developers to construct applications and services around the financial institution) quite rapidly.

According to Christine Robson, manager in the Monitor Deloitte corporate strategy group, open banking is here to stay. Open banking legislation and the use of Open Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) that allow third party developers to construct applications and services across financial institution is opening up both consumer benefits and partnership opportunities.

“Open banking is not a new concept, it’s a movement.”

With the right application and adaptation, open banking has a potential to reshape the entire industry.

Panel

Stemming off from the topic of finance and chatbots, a panel featuring Jake Tyler from Finn.ai, Sasha Caskey from Kasisto, and Gurpreet Singh from BMO, gave insight on designing and deploying conversational AI. Participants challenges one another with thought-provoking questions for the future. With AI in banking, what will the future look like? How can one ensure bank loyalty in an age where millennials will never touch foot in a bank; is chatbot the answer to this?

Technology has created an accelerated society, things are always changing. I like to say the Internet doesn’t have a finish line. There’s no one who could say “Alright, I figured it out, I’m done”. There’s always new services, there’s always new apps and that means new opportunities. Digital transformation is essential for small businesses cos it gives them the tools to be competitive in a digital economy.

Small businesses that are not fully transformed to digital are gonna have a really hard time in the next five years keeping afloat especially if you do want your business to survive in the next, you know, decade; so many things are turning digital. I even look at, you know, I teach at Seneca and I work with photographers and I’m like you know, even photography is gonna be changing. You gotta think about- if you wanna be a wedding photographer, people are probably gonna be wanting to watch a wedding in VR in like 360, so don’t just learn photography, learn how to do VR.

Millennials will be about 50% of the population very very soon. And so, understanding how to engage with that talent, how to get the most out of that talent it’s gonna be really important for businesses both to engage their employees from an employee-engagement perspective, but also as you sell to those customers as well. They’re also becoming the predominant buyers in the ecosystem, and so knowing them again on those two sides of the coin, knowing them as a buyer and knowing them as an employee is really important.

Most small businesses are quite intimidated by the amount of data out there, and they don’t know what to do with it. So, I think that by understanding and bringing out new technology tools, or analytical tools for small businesses to be able to capture what they’ve got, utilize it and kinda pull out those insights is gonna be key.

This idea that IT is democratized, that small businesses have access to the same technology that large businesses do is empowering. And right now, the benefits from that technology are tenfold, the changes are happening so fast, the ability for technology to improve your productivity, to increase your creativity, to drive innovation and create new products is all there for everybody.

It’s so important that the small businesses have access to the same kind of tools that the bigger companies do. And it’s not very often that they get to watch speakers talk about AI, or you know, patent, anything we were talking about today so, I think the drill really encourages them to kinda think outside of the box think that they’re bigger than they are and that’s definitely gonna help them wrangle all the future when it comes to tech.

-We’re a small business nation. 99% of businesses in Canada are small businesses, so in order to strengthen that innovative ecosystem that we have, the innovation economy if you will, we need to strengthen small businesses.

We chase big companies like Amazon trying to get them to locate their second headquarters here. When the strength of Toronto’s digital community is in small businesses, it’s in startups, it’s in the grass root of Toronto’s tech community not in the big business world.

-Small stores are actually what make a community, it’s not the big box stores. When you go to Queen St. West it’s not Queen St. West because of Walmart, like there’s no Walmart there, so if you look at all the little neighborhoods in Toronto especially, like, those neighborhoods literally exist because of the small businesses, and I think if people wanted to PI websites and check that all the businesses that were in the area they’d be really surprised at how many businesses they could get all their stuff from. So it’s just so important to realize that you could shop local and actually support everything we need.

On April 20th, local Toronto business owners filled the Council Chambers at City Hall for a day of transformational insight and the digital best practices at the Digital Main Street Forum hosted by Digital Main Street (DMS).

The Digital Main Street Forum was organized to encourage growing main street businesses to apply technology in ways that can take their business to the next level. From online marketing to customer research to data practices and emerging technologies, the forum challenged business owners to reach outside their comfort zones to consider new opportunities for their businesses.

Jesse Hirsh started the day off by highlighting technology’s impact on the workplace, focusing on automation, robots, co-working, blockchain, and more.

“Technology has created an accelerated society,” said Hirsh, “There are always new services and apps, and that means new opportunities.”

Social media is the new marketing

Dani Gagnon of Dani G Inc. is a mastermind behind some of the most clever social media tactics that businesses can use to drive customer engagement. She highlighted how deftly adapting your content to pop culture trends has the power to drive meaningful interactions.

By intertwining relevant pop culture with organizational objectives, you can ride the wave of a current trend. She shared an example from the time she headed social media for an insurance company. On the same night, the popular television series Game of Thrones had aired, she shared a poll, “What Game of Thrones character most needs life insurance?” This effort of practically tying the business’s offering into this trending content brought relevancy, which was quickly followed with awareness and engagement.

Tip: practice connecting your business back to a trend regularly. Pick five trends and see how you can shape your offering to be relevant to the trend.

Data is the new oil

Data Scientist Corrine Sandler had desired to fill a gap she noticed while working in the research market. With Fresh Intelligence Research, she and her team are able to produce fast, cost-efficient research with actionable truths.

Sandler says understanding data and how to put it to its best use is the secret to creating experiences that customers are willing to pay for.

“Your greatest asset is your customer. Your second greatest asset is your data.”

Sandler emphasized that data is a great asset that can be used to find conversion opportunities. She shared an example of a pool company that found customers converted better when two consecutive days of temperatures were above the historical average. In this case, data helped the company discover the best time to advertise and the most effective ways to do so.

All in all, data is a big deal and it’s extremely important to know how to use it to your advantage.

Millennials and the new-age workplace

Cheri Chevalier, General Manager of Cloud Services & Software at Microsoft, probed businesses to seek millennials for talent in the workplace, and how this will economically benefit them.

“Millennials will be about 50 per cent of the population very soon, and it’s understanding how to engage and get the most out of that talent that’s going to be really important for businesses, both to engage their employees but also as you sell to those customers as well.”

Chevalier also quoted that millennials are becoming the prominent buyers in the ecosystem.

Digital Main Street Forum was a great opportunity for business owners to learn about technological advances that are shaping the way Torontonians are doing business.

We encourage businesses of all sizes to explore how digital can help improve product and service delivery and customer experience!

The FITC Toronto 2018 conference shook the city, showcasing the latest in creativity and technology at Toronto’s Hilton Hotel, April 8 through April 10, 2018.

Innovators, digital storytellers, product managers, technology experts, and creatives attended to hear and experience the way innovation, technology, and creativity has made a heavy impact on a variety of industries thus far, and how it will continue to evolve in the coming years.

With over 70 speakers representing the top digital, creative, and innovative companies in the world, our team has picked out some game-changing content that we’d like to share with you.

Going deeper with design

It was a real treat to hear from Jessica Walsh, a young and renowned designer in NYC, and co-founder of Sagmeister & Walsh. Walsh encouraged purposeful constraints that flow from research. For example, no text on billboards in India because language is so fractured among different segments of the populous. Instead, tell the story with images and you tell the story clearly to everyone.

The concept of purposeful constraints was later echoed by Matt McCue of 99u who spoke eloquently about telling great stories, encouraging storytellers to bring a clear and detailed point of view to their stories, but share just the right amount of magical outcome with the audience, rather than detailing how you got there.

“Let’s deliver a point of view that can’t be uncovered by the outcome.”

~ Matt McCue

Data visualization and usage

Corey Ouellette, Data Experience Developer at Thomson Reuters, gave a great talk on data exploration and visualization considerations.

He finished his talk by challenging the audience to critically analyze their data and ask the questions, “Does the data support a hypothesis? Does the data point to something?”

He also spoke sbout using data to tell stories that engage customers and using a narrative that they would want to immerse themselves in in order to garner effective results.

Storytelling best practices

Creative Director Graham McDonnell from The New York Times attracted a full room of content creators, innovators, and digital practitioners in his talk, “Putting the ‘Story’ into Storytelling.”

He expounded on six key factors to keep in mind when telling stories so that they are colourful and engaging for your audience.

Remember the five W’s

Keep it clear

Promise to give the explanation

Leave something unknown

Use numbers

Keep the interesting facts at the top, don’t bury them in the middle or the end

“In the word ‘storytelling’, the story comes before the telling.”

~ Graham McDonnell, New York Times

Graham went on to say that execution is just as important as the story itself. He emphasized that content marketers must connect relatable experiences to their stories, sharing stories that readers can relate to, or stories that they might have fantasized about, so that it’s easy to gain their attention and interest.

VR usage and how it’s emerging

While much of the work around virtual reality centres on enhancing the way people shop and play games, crafting immersive experiences can be a central part of engaging in an environment. Vaitari Anderson and Dwayne Grech from R&R Partners have been using VR to enhance the experiences of Las Vegas tourists.

As creative as VR in tourism may seem, Vaitari and Dwayne believe there’s real value to bringing VR to industries such as education, manufacturing, industrial.

“VR is a flexible tool that you can use for entertaining but also a tool to assist in particular industries.”

~ Dwayne Grech, R&R Partners

Other popular topics discussed throughout the conference include AI and machine learning, creative problem solving, and creating design systems.

FITC is a conference unlike most. The creativity represented at this conference is out of this world, with hand-picked speakers and panelists challenging attendees to think outside the box when working in the digital industry and beyond. With speakers who excel in everything from video production to neuroscience, from content to space, we encourage you to join us at FITC Toronto next year to challenge your work process and be inspired by some of the best the world has to offer in creativity and technology.

The future is unending

In the meantime, if you’re looking for support in navigating these kind of emerging new technologies and methodologies to ensure your organization is effectively serving your business and your users, we’re here to help.
