Here are a few sessions we’d like to highlight:

CX data and analytics

Customer data and related insights are a foundational aspect of ongoing product and services decision-making. We often find organizations struggle with knowing what data is valuable and how to leverage it towards improved customer experience. We expect these two talks will bring clarity on how to improve your data practices.

Day 2 Opening Panel Discussion: Actionable Insights – Harness CX Data Analytics for Actionable Insights That Drive Bottom-Line Results with Ashley Fitzgerald, Afshin Ahangar, John Ross, and John Oxford, Wednesday at 10:05 AM

Industry Expert: Harvesting Better Data – The Unstructured Data Goldmine: Target, Extract, & Share Value with Josh Snider, Wednesday at 11:45 AM

Customer journey best practices

Another typical organizational gap covered in these talks: unifying customer communication across all channels and eliminating information silos, often described as omni-channel, or a 360 degree customer view.

Industry Expert: Unify, Streamline, Connect – How to Build Better Customer Journeys with Amrit Dhangal, Wednesday at 10:40 AM

Spotlight Session: Powering Up Digital CX Journeys – Adapt Your Customer Strategies to Meet the New Digital CX: From Consideration and Applications with Kasia Bigda, Wednesday at 3:30 PM

It makes it something totally different. And so, the more personality that you can give to it, I think, the better. And, you know, I say personality and that sometimes comes across as it being a character and it sometimes can be, but it can also just be in its outward aesthetic. If you were to take just a television and add a different, completely different aesthetic to it, it becomes something else. It becomes something just a little more magical than just a TV on the wall.

What I like to do is pull out those story elements, even if it’s not a literally story, there’s always some underlying idea of even a hint of something happening. The essence of this idea of a story behind every song.

– Well, our senses affect our perception of the world. So we learn about the world by touching it, by tasting it, by seeing it, by smelling it, by hearing it, and when you start to play with that … So when you start to play with new relationships … So let’s say that I see something red. And then I taste it and it actually tastes like lime, whoa. It really starts to mess with what you think of as real, as right. And so, that ability, and that’s actually called cross-modal experience, so how one sense can affect a different sense. When we start to play with that, I think, there’s obviously all sorts of new creativity that can open up, but it also pushes us to rethink our expectations of the world. And I think that that’s a really cool way of being. And it allows us then maybe to have different kinds of relationships with other people for example. There’s practical application of that, too, not just in making work, but maybe also in our daily lives with how we interact with each other.

How far can our minds take us? What’s possible when innovation, technology and creativity is added to the mix?

A global leader in presenting tech conferences, the Future of Innovation, Technology and Creativity (FITC) team took Toronto on a journey to A World of Pure Imagination—this year’s theme of FITC Toronto 2019.

For 18 years, the FITC conference has inspired and educated thousands of digital creatives and industry experts from around the world. This year, over 1000 people sat in on keynotes, panel discussions, workshops and fireside chats at the Hilton Toronto to feed their creative minds. Speakers from Adobe, NASA, Google, Shopify, and many other leading names in the design industry shared their lessons and discoveries in technology and design.

From advances in augmented and virtual reality, to food, sexual monkey gifs, and life-sized robots, there was a lot to see at experience this year. Here’s what we wanted to share with you from this year’s conference.

Food, Senses, and Emotional Engagement

Everyone loves food, but is there more to it than satisfying our stomachs? Food technologist, designer and multimedia artist Emilie Baltz challenged attendees to question the ultimate purpose of food in her talk Food: Not For Eating.

Baltz specializes in storytelling for the senses, (the ability to feel stories physically in our bodies) and food’s ability to inspire innovations in interaction design. She uses food as a material for design, expressing how it can introduce new creativity in the world. This year, she explored how food inspires creativity and engages humans emotionally, suggesting that designers can use these factors as a jumping off point for inspiration.

“It’s not about food, it’s about relationships.” ~Emilie

Baltz

It seems virtual or voice-monitored cookbooks are on the near horizon. With the rise of AI bots and voice assistant tools, cooking by-the-recipe could be transformed into a more interactive and enjoyable experience rather than a chore. Bon Appetit!

Simplicity is a Complex Design Concept

Simple is simple…right?

Not according to Google UX Design Lead David Hogue. He told us why that’s not the case during his talk entitled Simplicity is Not Simple. His top three questions:

How can design be less chaotic?

Is too simple too boring?

Is there such a thing as “just the right amount of complexity”?

Every designer has struggled with at least one of these questions. Thankfully, David had some great answers.

Designers are problem solvers. They can clarify complex systems that come from poor design methods, poor project management, or technological shortfalls. The overall goal is to ensure that what they create is as simple as possible for users.

“Sometimes systems are naturally complex, we design to help people deal with the complex.” ~David Hogue

At the same time, too much simplicity can result in underperforming UX design. With simplicity, you have to meet in the middle. Hogue gave designers three considerations to keep in mind when working to deliver simplicity in UX design:

Ensure that your product or service is efficient.

Ensure that your product is enhancing value to the user

Ensure that your product is helping people learn.

He also Identified key steps designers should take as they embark on the journey of simplicity, which we will be sure to keep in mind for our future projects:

Subtraction

Consolidation

Redistribution

Prioritization

Clarification

Design is Terrifying, Yet Rewarding

Designing interactive robots may be fun, but it is by no means easy. Executive Creative Director Michael Fullman took us through his design journey at VT Pro, proving that his job is messy, rewarding, and includes challenges that you can’t prepare for or anticipate.

As one who designs robotic interactions and 3D products for massive endeavours like Telestron and Coachella, Fullman understands the importance of testing and learning from big design mistakes.

“Getting feedback is the best part.” ~Michael Fullman

Experimentation and adaptation go hand-in-hand in the innovative work that takes place at VT Pro. Fullman broke down three benefits to embracing adaptation—which are also great principles to live by:

Learning as you go.

Taking risks with new technology

Living outside your comfort zone.

Creating a unique type of technology requires a great deal of risk—like the risk of not being understood, or the risk of alienation. But it’s often these risky projects that, if carried through patiently and successfully, set you apart from other designers—in a good way.

For experienced designers and aspiring designers alike, going through the archives of David Carson’s iconic design work was a dream. His session Intuition, Collage and Design took attendees through a fascinating journey of innovative magazine design, and use of experimental typography.

He showcased his previous work for brands such as Nike, Pepsi, and Microsoft.

Carson also shared the quirky, painful, and peculiar details of his designer journey, as his work took him all around the world. The moral of the story: do what you love, and have fun in the process.

<img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-8127" src="https://insights.sayyeah.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/davidc.jpg" alt="David Carson showing his most iconic work at FITC.

“If money was not an issue would you still be excited to do that work daily? I think we are in a field that allows you to do that—allows you to not watch the clock and wait on vacations. To seriously enjoy what you do and not do it only to pay bills.” ~David Carson

Carson finished off with a word of encouragement for the next generation of designers who may have felt discouraged at any point throughout their creative journeys.

“Your wave is coming. Hang in there.” ~David Carson

Node.js, and the web platform, are really in this deeply interconnected Venn diagram of technologies, where we have JavaScript, HTML, and the web platform as this common dialect of how we’re able to deliver these dynamic experiences that we need to put in front of our end-users. So, Node, is speaking the same language as it is enabling us to deliver those experiences faster and I expect the broad consensus around, Node and its open governance and the web and its broad usage and standards, to continue to drive innovation, both for developers and for businesses.

It’s really important that you’re really unified as much as possible and I think that’s what JavaScript and Node moving to the server has helped having, it is language. At the end of the day, it is just the exact same things that primary language is, it’s a means of communication and that’s what it is, and you’re communicating when you write that software.

The challenge of the network transformation program we embarked upon wasn’t really about technology or systems, even though it was. There are huge investments in technology. Massive IT systems investments, but the more and more you delved into it, it was about a cultural change that needed to be made and how a shift in mindset needed to occur around how the organization went to market in a far more standardized way. So, they’re moving from a world of proprietary technology to an open standard world and that drives a significant shift in how the company operates.

Days like this are really important to bring people together to share ideas because often people are working in an organization, they have close contact with their team, but they’re not necessarily getting outside of that organization, that silo. So things like this, days like this, where you have presentations on different topics and you have different perspectives coming in and discussing different areas of work, I think are really important to be able to take that information back into the organization so that you can use it.

I’m working with, all the other Walmart infrastructure teams to make Node.js a more accessible platform for all our development teams. We’re growing out, new tools to make developing secure code easier and seamless.

One thing that is extremely important to me, that I would like to put a lot more time towards, is this journey and this story of JavaScript becoming a seamless coding platform, front and back. So, to do that, you would want Node on the back end, and this gives so many great possibilities to developers to really hone their skills in JavaScript and be able to code backwards and forwards, the application they need. And, you don’t have to just to be on front end. You can switch your developers around as you like because we always want to keep learning and keep making new things. So, Node, I think is the stepping stone to really making this kind of universal standard of how we code and I think that standards like that are really important to be able to create more and more.

So Telus and Ahmad were amazing. They have been instrumental in our progress so far. They reached out to us and they saw what we were doing and they’re like, how can we help? And we were just blown away by how supportive they’ve been. They have been instrumental in introducing us to people who want to volunteer with our group and also helping, I think really showing our kids how large corporations care about them as well and I think that’s a really important aspect of teaching kids why it’s important to enter tech.

On May 2nd, TechMasters partnered with TELUS to host NodeDay 2018, a one-day event highlighting how node.js provides a solid digital transformation foundation for legacy organizations. Ultimately, NodeDay was designed to inform leaders about the benefits of using modern programming languages and approaches in order to combat disruption.

Welcoming over 200 C-level attendees and developers at the TELUS digital Conference Space, the event was a source for rich insights on programming, agile approaches, data best practices, and the benefits of working with open source technologies.

Top representatives of the javascript and digital transformation scenes shared a wealth of insights through the various talks, panels, and workshops that took place at NodeDay 2018. Here are some takeaways.

Digital transformation as the DNA in organizations

Every successful business in the world is using technology, whether selling a product or service, actively engaging customers, or supporting how your team works together. With every business looking to improve customer experience and service delivery models, it’s those who can tap into the most effective, transformational technology and processes that begin to set themselves apart. But how do businesses keep up with emerging technologies and practices? How do they know which what will benefit them the most?

Paul Savage, COO at nearForm, says organizations will only know the impact of the right technology in their businesses if they take the time to understand it and always find new ways to apply it.

“The real secret is to build a culture of innovation. It’s not about, ‘I’m on a legacy system. I’m gonna transform, I’m gonna be on a new system and everything’s good.’ It’s building in the capability to change and innovate as you go. Digital transformation will lead to DNA inside organizations where they are constantly changing.”

Organizations need to prepare for, jump into, and understandably ride the waves of digital transformation to become adaptive to new opportunities afforded by emerging technologies.

Applying Node.js isn’t just a trend, it’s a game changer for experience delivery

Node.js is a platform that will continue to bring alignment and efficiency to teams through a shared language across the full development stack.

“Node.js and the web platform are really this deeply connected Venn diagram of technologies where we have Javascript, HTML, and the Web cloud platform as this common dialect of how we’re able to deliver these dynamic experiences for end users. Node is speaking the same language and it is enabling us to deliver those experiences faster,” said Dan Shaw, Strategic Advisor at nearForm.

Large enterprises are adopting Node.js because of community benefits

Principal Architect Joel Chen said that WalmartLabs immediately invested in Node.js as their standard platform for web development, not just for the internal team efficiencies it provided, but in an effort to tap into an open community and follow open standards.

“We wanted to be able to hire people who have existing skills that they could immediately use when they came to WalmartLabs. [Node.js] is collaborative and has a huge community and an open working environment.”

Other topics discussed at NodeDay included security and privacy in digital businesses, data as a driving force for customer delivery, innovation, and inclusivity benefits and practices.

NodeDay 2018 was a great opportunity to channel in on how modern technology, like Node.js, play a role in transforming organizations. We encourage you to stay connected with TechMasters to keep up to date with their future events.

From uncovering new market opportunities to finding new efficiencies through technology and processes, we’re here to help.

If you’re exploring ways to bring new efficiencies to your organization, let’s talk.
